Last week Cygnum Capital's Orli Arav and Alix Graham (FEI Off-Grid Energy Access Fund) attended a pivotal Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) Seminar at The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP)'s Nairobi Office, coinciding with the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) Annual Governing Council Meetings.
DRE is the term used when electricity is generated from renewable energy sources such as wind, solar and battery storage schemes near the point of use instead of centralised generation sources from power plants. DRE significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions, helping combat climate change and its detrimental effects. It also minimises the environmental impact associated with extracting, transporting, and burning fossil fuels.
The seminar provided a platform for discussions on the opportunities, achievements, current landscape, challenges, and needs within the #DRE sector. Highlighting the sector's immense potential for driving low carbon economic growth across the continent, participants reached consensus on the necessity of coordinated efforts to scale the industry effectively and the critical role of standardisation.
